For many people, a computer is an amazing machine by processing information powerfully. You can draw pictures, play games, surf the web and many more other useful applications. In reality, a computer can only do simple things and it can only do one of these simple things at any given time. Computers can run complex applications because they can do simple things one after the other very very fast.
In conclusion, a computer will contain a set of simple things that it can execute and each simple thing in the set will be executed very fast by the computer. Type of simple things and order of simple things will determine complex applications that computers will execute.
Simple things that are not in the set of simple things will not be executed by computer (out of computer’s ability). Therefore, complex applications that contain those simple things will not also be executed by computer. As you can see, the most important thing that helps a computer execute complex applications well is not the computer's complexity but the speed of the computer's processing. Even if an application is simple but the speed of the computer is slow, that application can not be executed on the computer as fast as we want. You can not wait many hours, days, months,…to wait for displaying pictures.
One thing that you must remember, computer work by electricity and speed of computer will be related to speed of electricity. Speed of light is approximately 300000 km/s. That’s amazing speed. With that speed, light can go around the Earth 7 rounds per second.
Electricity has many similar properties to light and speed is one of those similar properties. However, the speed of electricity in wire will be slow by a haft, so with that speed, electricity can go around the Earth 3.5 rounds per second. That’s still a very very fast speed.
Now, we can assume that electricity can complete one simple thing when it runs one foot (approximately 30.48 cm) on a computer. So with a speed of 150000 km/s, computers can execute approximately 500 million simple things per second. With a large number of simple things per second like that, computers can execute complex applications fast and we will not wait to display pictures for many days, months,…
Distances between parts in a computer can be one foot, or less than much more. That distances can be 1 inch, 1/10 inch, 1/1000 inch,…The shorter among the parts, the faster electricity reaches them.
That is all about the speed of the computer's processing. In next posts, we will go deeper into the structure of computers. Computers will be constructed from many parts. All parts are constructed from the same type of device. Each part will perform a specific function and when we combine them, an amazing computer is ready. Those posts will be not too theoretical and very easy to understand. Everyone can read them even if you do not have knowledge about computers before.
