What Are Bits in Computers

All things in all posts will help you visualize about the way that computers work generally. Note that it is not the real structure of modern computers, but the way that modern computers work is nearly the same as in my posts. I am sure that if you understand about the way that computers work in my posts, you will easy to learn about all fields of computer afterward. Thank you !!!

Computers can display static pictures, moving pictures, play music, write letters, play games, communicate with people around the world,…But whether computers really contain those pictures? Do computers contain letters such as “A”, “B” or numbers such as “1”, “2” or music?

The answer is not surely. You can break it to see in computers. There are no pictures or letters or numbers. The only thing that exists in computers is bits. Computers contain very very many bits. And these bits will help computers perform the functions that I said above.

So what is bits? We have some examples about it such as lamp will only have two states that are on and off, a coin will also have states that are two faces of it. Anything that only have two possible states will be refered as bit. A bit can be defined as a physical object that exists in space (have size, shape,…) and it can only have one in two possible states at any given time. A bit can be impacted to change between two possible states.

You can imagine bits like a lamp system in your room. When the switch is “on”, the lamp lights. When the switch is “off”, the lamp does not light. If you remove the lamp, the wire after the switch will still have electricity or not when the switch is on or off. In reality, bits are like wires rather than lamps because bits only have two possible states: have electricity or no electricity and bits do not have lamps to realize electricity in wire.

Maybe you have learned about bits in computers and it is difficult to understand what it is. Bits in computers have properties similar to bits that I defined above. It has a small size with a very large amount in computers. It can only have one in two possible states that are having electricity and no electricity. Ability of change the states of computer bits is faster than other bits such as coins, lamps,…because bits use electricity to change states. Speed of electricity in wire is about 150000 km/s so the time that it takes to change states of bits is very very fast.

In conclusion, computers will only contain bits and have a very large amount of bits. When you understand bits, you will understand all about computers. In the next post, I will introduce to you a device that helps to control the state of bits in a computer. I hope this post simplified your thinking about computers and how computers work. Thanks for reading and see you again.
